Vermillion Amanita

vermillion amanitaThe vermillion amanita is sometimes called the yellow or pretty grisette which is a bit of a misnomer, as it is not related to these edible mushrooms and is actually toxic.  The amanita xanthocephala is unusual for amanitas as it has no ring on the stem.  Although this was a very young one, the vermillion amanita is smaller than most of the other amanitas I have seen and will only get to about 50mm wide.  It has white gills, a yellow or orange cap, a smooth stem and a bulbous base.
