The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Earthstar

earthstarThe oats are looking lush and the horses are looking for ways to get into the paddock, so I checked the fences.   I was tightening the bottom wire on the south boundary to make sure Bowie didn’t squeeze under and I noticed what I thought were lots of snails on the ground.  I looked closer and saw that they were little puffball mushrooms, about 10-15mm across.  They are an earthstar, a species of Geastrum – probably Pectinatum.

I put some more images in a facebook album.
