The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Neighbour

20130725 017I spotted movement in the bottom paddock and realised my neighbour had arrived and had already started turning over the new oat paddock with his heavy duty offset disc harrows.   He is a real farmer, at least a third generation farmer, and I try to learn as much as I can from him.   One of the key indications that he is a real farmer is that my “creek” is his “drain” and my cows are his cattle.  He suggested we add lime to the paddock to help reduce the onion weed.  Apparently his father (or grandfather) was offered the property over 50 years ago for something like 1 pound an acre!   He didn’t take it, the rocky ridge and forest is not attractive to real farmers as they can’t clear it or use it.  The part we were ploughing was supposed to have been offset as a nature reserve, but the previous owner cleared it by mistake….
