Rescuing Romeo
Just after feeding the horses I heard a commotion with the guinea fowl. The birds were all pecking and picking on one bird. It had crawled into a gap in a pile of rocks trying to protect its head, but they were all pecking at its back. It was making an awful wailing, moaning cry that I have never heard before. I picked him up and chased the other birds off, but he was too wild and broke free and ran off. The birds chased him again and the poor pecked and picked on Guinea Fowl got driven into a drum of oil. Because his feathers were covered in oil, he was hampered and I was able to catch and hold on to him. I spent the next couple of hours soaping, washing and rinsing his feathers. I kept him wrapped in a towel while I was working on him and he was surprisingly calm. I put him in the brooder box and he went pretty quiet. I hope he survives. He will probably be killed when I release him again, but at least he will be able to fly with his clean feathers.
