{"id":1595,"date":"2013-03-27T10:15:29","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T02:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/?p=1595"},"modified":"2014-06-02T14:53:47","modified_gmt":"2014-06-02T06:53:47","slug":"a-look-into-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/27\/a-look-into-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"A Look into the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/20130324-020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1556\" alt=\"20130324 020\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/20130324-020-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/20130324-020-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/20130324-020.jpg 801w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Once the goats are settled into our daily lives, the next plan is for some sheep in the bottom paddock. \u00a0This is at least a year (and six hundred metres of fencing) off, but I am putting my mind to it already to be open to any and all information on sheep that presents itself.<\/p>\n<p>An advert in the local paper for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wiltipoll\" target=\"_blank\">Wiltipoll<\/a> sheep, led to a bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burkesbackyard.com.au\/factsheets\/Others\/Wiltipoll-Sheep\/2902\">googling<\/a> and reading which showed that these could be a much better option than the Dorper sheep that a number of our neighbours have. \u00a0 Both are wool-shedding sheep which make them more suitable for small farms as they don&#8217;t need shearing, crutching, \u00a0dipping, mulesing or tail docking. \u00a0In addition,\u00a0chemical treatments are not needed for flies or lice and they are grass seed resistant.<\/p>\n<p>The bias towards Wiltipolls was reinforced today when I found a <a href=\"http:\/\/farmerswayoflife.blogspot.com.au\/2011\/08\/golden-rules-of-farming-part-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">great site with some golden rules of farming<\/a> &#8211; which had the following<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>41. Dorper lambs could not be contained with a chain wire fence and a security guard. They are the epitome of &#8220;Free Range.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>216. Dorpers were not introduced to Australia, they merely escaped South Africa.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>217. Dorper, when translated from Afrikaans, means &#8220;Fence, what fence?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0218.
