{"id":1753,"date":"2013-04-06T18:58:26","date_gmt":"2013-04-06T10:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/?p=1753"},"modified":"2013-04-06T18:58:26","modified_gmt":"2013-04-06T10:58:26","slug":"chasing-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/06\/chasing-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"Chasing Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130406-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1767\" alt=\"20130406 014\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130406-014-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130406-014-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130406-014.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>As it was a sunny day, I decided I would persevere with trying to get a photo of the butterflies that flutter through the forest. \u00a0Easier said than done. \u00a0Even when they are still, they are almost impossible to see against the leaf litter and their flight is so random that I find it almost impossible to get them in the viewfinder. \u00a0 I managed to get some of the wings open so I could try and try and identify them. \u00a0 In one of the photos, it looked more like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dec.wa.gov.au\/our-environment\/science-and-research\/animal-conservation-research\/invertebrates\/butterflies-day-flying-moths.html\" target=\"_blank\">sun moth<\/a> with its wings closed up, but in flight it did look more like the Common Brown <a href=\"http:\/\/lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au\/nymp\/nymphalidae.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nymph<\/a>,\u00a0<b><i><a href=\"http:\/\/lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au\/nymp\/merope.html\" target=\"_blank\">Heteronympha merope<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>&#8220;<\/i><\/b><i>The adults, like those of many\u00a0<\/i><i><i>NYMPHALIDAE<\/i>, have only 4 legs. The adult female is predominently orange on the upper wing surfaces. The outer halves of the forewings and the\u00a0margins<\/i><i>\u00a0of the hindwings are dark brown. A blue-centred eyespot and three yellow patches are enclosed within the black half of each forewing. \u00a0Another blue eyespot is on the each hindwing.\u00a0The adults are difficult to notice on leaf litter when their wings are closed.&#8221;<\/i><b><i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130406-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
