{"id":1957,"date":"2013-04-25T10:30:25","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T02:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/?p=1957"},"modified":"2013-04-25T11:35:30","modified_gmt":"2013-04-25T03:35:30","slug":"anzac-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/25\/anzac-day\/","title":{"rendered":"ANZAC Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130425-034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1949\" alt=\"20130425 034\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130425-034-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130425-034-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130425-034.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Lest We Forget. \u00a0The 25th of April is the day when Australians remember the sacrifice of all those who have died in war. \u00a0 It takes a special person to selflessly serve their country, and secure the freedoms of a democracy, leaving homes and families for long periods and in some cases never returning. \u00a0 Many have been killed in the prime of their lives, so we can live ours in safety, liberty and autonomy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>At the going down of the sun and in the morning<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We will remember them.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/commemoration\/anzac\/anzac_tradition.asp\" target=\"_blank\">ANZAC Day<\/a>\u00a0marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces. \u00a0During the First World War they joined an allied operation to\u00a0capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople\/Istanbul &#8211;\u00a0allied to \u00a0Germany &#8211;\u00a0and secure a sea route to Russia. \u00a0\u00a0The ANZACs landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915, but met fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. \u00a0The campaign dragged on for eight months, but ultimately failed and the allied forces were evacuated on 9 January 1916, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties &#8211; \u00a0over 8,000 Australian soldiers were killed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.army.gov.au\/Our-history\/Traditions\/The-Rising-Sun-Badge\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.army.gov.au\/Our-history\/Traditions\/~\/media\/Images\/Our%20History\/Traditions\/Rising%20Sun%20Badge\/The%207th%20Pattern%20Rising%20Sun%20Badge.PNG\" width=\"230\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rising_Sun_(badge)\" target=\"_blank\">Rising Sun<\/a> is the official insignia of the Australian Armed Forces. \u00a0The first rising sun badge was designed in 1902 with a crown surrounded by bayonets. \u00a0Worn by soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Force in both World Wars, the badge has become an integral part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digger_(soldier)\" target=\"_blank\">Digger<\/a>\u00a0tradition. \u00a0The distinctive emblem worn on the upturned side of a slouch hat \u00a0illustrates the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ANZAC_spirit\" target=\"_blank\">spirit of the ANZAC<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211;
