{"id":2776,"date":"2013-06-05T15:02:37","date_gmt":"2013-06-05T07:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/?p=2776"},"modified":"2013-06-10T16:07:51","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T08:07:51","slug":"knockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/05\/knockdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Knockdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130529_172259.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2650\" alt=\"glyphosate knockdown\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130529_172259-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130529_172259-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/20130529_172259.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glyphosate\" target=\"_blank\">glyphosate<\/a>\u00a0did its job on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/22\/here-comes-the-capeweed\/\">capeweed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/23\/seedy-sorrel\/\">sorrel<\/a>\u00a0and most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/09\/chemical-warfare\/\">onion weed<\/a> in the oat paddock. \u00a0We had <a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2013\/05\/12\/dam-rising-damn-sowing\/\">sprayed the paddock on the 12th May<\/a>,\u00a0as the early break to the season and the heavier than average rain had germinated a lot of weeds. \u00a0 \u00a0I was wary about using a broad spectrum systemic herbicide, but with the equipment we have for cultivating the paddock, we had little choice. \u00a0Glyphosate is the most common herbicide used in agriculture (and the urban environment with people splashing Roundup all over the place). \u00a0The oat paddock is relatively flat and on the top of a hill, so I was not too concerned about run-off to the dam or creek which are over 150m away.<\/p>\n<p>All the literature says that glyphosate is absorbed quickly into the plant and breaks down on contact with the soil, but I have noticed a yellowing of grass where I have walked out of the oat paddock to other places on the property. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t walk through the paddock for at least a week after spraying, so it looks like it stays potent for longer than they make out, or is revived anytime the foliage gets wet with rain or dew.<\/p>\n<p>Having checked the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.agric.wa.gov.au\/objtwr\/imported_assets\/content\/fcp\/cer\/oat\/predicting_z71_dates_fn.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sowing and harvesting dates<\/a>\u00a0for the different types of oats, I think we will probably follow this method in the future. \u00a0By planting in June, we push the harvest out to late October, we can even plant into early July. \u00a0Last year I had been spooked into planting early with all the neighbouring farmers cultivating and seeding from late April. \u00a0I had forgotten \u00a0that they were planting pasture seed rather than oats. \u00a0We will have to check for a second germination of capeweed over the next 4 weeks and may have to spray again with a selective herbicide, but I hope not.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/naldc.nal.usda.gov\/download\/17918\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\">Apparently Glyphosate<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><em>&#8211; is one of the least toxic pesticides to\u00a0animals.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8211; is an environmentally benign\u00a0herbicide.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8211; bonds tightly to soil\u00a0constituents, with very little movement to soil\u00a0and groundwater.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8211; has a relatively short\u00a0environmental half-life owing to microbial degradation\u00a0in the soil. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8211; is not volatile, so there is no\u00a0atmospheric contamination<\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8211;
