{"id":6021,"date":"2014-04-01T09:35:58","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T01:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/?p=6021"},"modified":"2014-04-01T09:51:49","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T01:51:49","slug":"mourning-their-mate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/01\/mourning-their-mate\/","title":{"rendered":"Mourning their Mate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6024\" alt=\"20140401 003\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-003-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-003-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-003.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Shorty barked just after 6.20am, she must have heard a commotion with the guinea fowl, but she quickly settled and didn&#8217;t ask to go out. \u00a0Just after 6.30am the <a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/category\/not-so-wildlife\/guinea-fowl\/\">guinea fowl<\/a> were in front of the house and I noticed that one of them was limping, when I counted them, one was missing. \u00a0After feeding the dog and horses I was taking hay to the goats and noticed the birds were still a bit noisy and heading back to the oat paddock. \u00a0 At the far side near the forest, I saw some magpies swooping down to the ground. \u00a0With my super long range eye, (thanks to a LASIK eye surgery mishap leaving me with multi-faceted\/multi-focal eyeballs like a fly), I could see a small patch of white over 100m\/300ft away on the ground. \u00a0I dropped the hay and jogged across the paddock and found the dead guinea with its neck torn out and its brain<a href=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6026\" alt=\"20140401 005\" src=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-005-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-005-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cathmiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/20140401-005.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> \u00a0 and eye picked out. She was still warm. \u00a0I carried her back to the other birds and laid her on the ground.
