The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Under Attack

20131103 063Brad’s organic pest control has worked wonders at keeping the cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae) off the brassicas but did nothing to stop the cabbage moth (Plutella xylostella) which have completely destroyed the broccoli, rainbow chard, rocket and even the perpetual spinach. Next year I will plant earlier or later to try and avoid this problem with netting and spraying. I was away for a couple of weeks when they got established, so hopefully will catch them before they eat everything next year. Organic control methods include spraying with various combinations of molasses, chilli and garlic or using Dipel which is the BT toxin/bacteria which has been genetically engineered into a number of commercial crops.
