The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

On Patrol

20131113 001 (3)The guineas are worth their weight in gold for their pest management abilities.  For the last few weeks they sometimes haven’t even been bothered to come over for tea as they are so full of grasshopper.   They spend their days marching in lines across different parts of the property.  They cover a lot of ground and we have barely seen any hoppers.   In 2009, our first year here, we had to spray our plantation  in November, December and January to protect our 3500 newly planted trees.  The hoppers were in plague proportions everywhere else, when you walked, they moved like a wave in front of you.  This is a dodgy mobile phone video showing them on some tin – imagine what they were like on stuff they could eat!
