The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Young Guinea Died

2013-02-07 10.35.39When we went to feed the birds this morning, the one-legged bird was dead. I wasn’t surprised and actually quite relieved its suffering was over, even more so when I picked it up and saw a gaping hole where its leg should have been. The fox hadn’t bitten its leg off, it had pulled it out of its socket. I can’t imagine the pain of that wound sitting on the ground and am surprised it lived as long as it did, even eating some lettuce and wheat yesterday evening. We buried him beside Goldie, we thought about leaving it for the fox, but decided not to reward its efforts. We called him Long John Silver and we will plant a silvery shrub over him in winter.
