The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Bye Bye Billie

20130513 027We realised during the day that Billie wasn’t with the flock.  Shorty had chased off a fox yesterday morning and the birds all clamoured when an eagle flew over earlier this morning.  We don’t know for sure what happened, but my money is on the fox.  Her bodyguard still seems to be looking for her.  Poor Billie only lasted 10 days longer than Benita.

The main lessons learned are to only incubate eggs in October/November as these are more likely to be fertile so we will give any eggs found in December/January to the dog,   incubate about 15 which should give 7-10 survivors and keep them in a cage till at least 12 weeks.
