Harrowing

furrow from stump jump harrowAfter seeding I ran the harrows round the paddock to cover the seeds and turn the soil over to get the oats to a better depth.  Oats germinate best between 50 and 75mm, but we probably only got them down about 40mm.   We have two 800mm stump jump harrows on the draw bar, so with an operating width just over 1.5m, it takes quite a few trips round the paddock to get it done.  You can travel a lot faster than with the landscape rake and it does leave satisfying furrows as you go. Which is just as well, as I didn’t finish till well after dark, so just had to follow the last row round, and round, and round…
