The Country Diary of a GenX Woman

Adobe

20131209 026We mixed our first batch of adobe. It is very difficult to get the mix right as you just have to judge by texture. The ratio of clay to sand should be 1:3, but it is still trial and error as we don;t know the exact proportion of clay in our “clay soil”.   We ended up with mix closer to 2:3.  It felt gritty, but held its shape when a golf ball sized ball is dropped from waist height.   We mixed the sand and clay dry in the mixer then added water.  This fire/heat layer should be at least 70mm thick and the next cobb layer which has straw mixed in for strength should be about 150mm.
